Novo Nordisk Partners with OpenAI to Accelerate Drug Development

Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk A/S has announced plans to deploy OpenAI's artificial intelligence technologies across all of its business units. The move is designed to accelerate drug development timelines, according to a Bloomberg report.

What the Partnership Entails

The financial terms of the agreement between Novo Nordisk and OpenAI remain undisclosed. The deal builds on the company's existing AI initiatives, which include a collaboration with Nvidia focused on scientific research.

Novo Nordisk expects AI to streamline operations across the entire pipeline — from identifying drug targets and conducting clinical trials to planning manufacturing. The technology is intended to help extract clearer insights from the company's proprietary datasets and run more efficient trials.

Novo Nordisk employees previously had access to a custom version of OpenAI's ChatGPT. The expanded partnership significantly broadens that footprint. Pilot programs will launch in the research and development, manufacturing, and commercial divisions, with full integration targeted by the end of 2026.

Why It Matters

Novo Nordisk is working to reclaim its competitive edge in the lucrative obesity drug market. The company was the first to bring powerful weight-loss treatments to market but has since lost ground to U.S. rival Eli Lilly & Co. Leveraging AI at scale could prove decisive in this ongoing battle for market dominance.

CEO Mike Doustdar emphasized that the OpenAI deal is not about replacing scientists or staff. Instead, the integration aims to dramatically boost their productivity. Doustdar compared the shift to the transition from fax machines to email.

Restructuring Under New Leadership

Since taking the helm in August 2025, Doustdar has cut approximately 9,000 jobs and carried out a broad organizational restructuring. He has described the changes as building a "performance culture" geared toward faster decision-making.

The OpenAI partnership fits squarely within Novo Nordisk's broader transformation strategy. By combining workforce reorganization with large-scale AI adoption, the company is signaling that technological modernization will be a primary driver of competitiveness in the pharmaceutical sector going forward.
