Google has rolled out a substantial expansion of its Gemini AI assistant across four core Workspace products — Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. The updated tool delivers deeper personalization and improved collaborative capabilities.

According to Google's official blog, when users select sources, Gemini can pull relevant information from their files, emails, and the web to surface useful insights while keeping data secure.

Embedding advanced AI into widely used productivity tools is reshaping how millions of people handle documents and data. Google is competing directly with Microsoft, which recently launched the Cowork AI agent in Microsoft 365. Each major Gemini update in Workspace raises the bar for the entire productivity software industry and showcases the commercial application of large language models at scale.

Gemini in Docs: Context-Aware Writing

In Google Docs, the AI now demonstrates stronger contextual understanding and offers new features for generating text in a specified style. Users can describe their task through the side or bottom panel.

For instance, a user might ask Gemini to draft a newsletter for a neighborhood association using January meeting minutes and an upcoming events list. After initial generation, the AI can refine specific sections or expand on particular ideas.

The developers highlight bulk editing capabilities — users can select a passage and issue a command such as making the content more professional while preserving an energetic tone.

Gemini in Sheets: Structure, Format, and Analyze

In spreadsheets, the AI assistant can build structure, format information, and perform complex analysis. Google offers an example of a user asking Gemini to organize a move to Chicago — automatically creating a room-by-room packing checklist, a utility contacts list, and a comparison table of moving company quotes pulled from email.

Gemini can also fill in missing data gaps. The language model generates text on demand, classifies and summarizes information, and retrieves real-time data from Google Search.

Gemini in Slides: Professional Presentations from Scratch

For presentations, the AI has learned to create professional layouts and fully editable charts from the ground up. Users can now request Gemini to generate a new slide that strictly matches the overall project style, drawing context from external files, emails, and web sources.

If the visual design doesn't meet expectations, the AI assistant can iteratively refine the layout and formatting.

Gemini in Drive: Intelligent Search and Analysis

Google's cloud storage gained an intelligent search and analysis feature. When users search Drive using natural language, the AI produces an AI Overview — a summary of the most relevant information from their files.

A new Ask Gemini in Drive function has also been introduced, allowing users to pose complex questions spanning documents, emails, calendar events, and internet data simultaneously.

Broader Context

In February, Google released Nano Banana 2, a visual generation model operating at Gemini Flash speeds.
