Apple Testing Standalone Siri App and Ask Siri Feature Ahead of Major AI Overhaul

Siri Is Being Reimagined as a Full AI Agent

Apple is testing a standalone application for its Siri voice assistant alongside a new Ask Siri feature designed to work across the company's entire ecosystem. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported the developments, citing people familiar with the matter.

The iPhone maker is overhauling its digital assistant as part of a sweeping restructuring of its artificial intelligence efforts. The upgraded Siri will feature a redesigned look and chatbot-like functionality. Internally, the project carries the codename Campo.

Why This Matters

Apple has struggled to achieve meaningful traction with Apple Intelligence, prompting the company to rebuild its AI platform around a revamped Siri. The goal is to transform the assistant from a basic voice tool into a system-level AI agent with deep integration across all apps. This positions Siri as a direct competitor to offerings like ChatGPT and Google Gemini at the operating system level on Apple devices.

A Dedicated Siri Application

As part of the transition, Apple is testing a standalone Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Its release is expected later in 2026. The app will serve as a central hub for interacting with the assistant and provide access to a full conversation history.

The main interface will display previous conversations in a list or grid format with text previews. Key capabilities include:

• Pinning favorite chats
• Saving and searching through conversation history
• Starting new conversations via a dedicated button
• Toggling between voice and text input modes
• Uploading attachments

The conversation screen will resemble the Messages app interface. The most significant change is the ability to interact with Siri in a conversational, chat-like format using either text or voice.

Redesigned Interface and Web Search

Users will be able to summon Siri via the power button or a voice command. Apple is also testing a redesigned visual interface to replace the glowing screen edges introduced in iOS 18. One option under consideration places Siri at the top of the display inside the Dynamic Island.

The updated assistant will be capable of delivering more detailed answers sourced from the web and generating news summaries using Apple News.

Deep OS-Level Integration

Apple is also developing tighter integration of the assistant into its operating systems. Built-in app menus will gain an Ask Siri option, allowing users to send selected content directly into a new conversation with the assistant.

Additionally, the company is building Write with Siri — a button that opens a suite of tools for generating and editing text. A similar feature already exists in the current version of iOS but is notoriously difficult to find.

Many of the new capabilities run on updated internal Apple Foundation Models alongside Google Gemini technology.

What Else We Know

The revamped Siri is designed for more effective control of iPhone and Mac features, including working with personal data such as messages, notes, and email. The assistant will be able to execute tasks within apps, access news content, and search the internet. Apple is expected to unveil the updates in June 2026.
