US and Germany Ramp Up AI Integration in Military Operations

Germany is developing an artificial intelligence system designed to accelerate battlefield decision-making, while the Pentagon has elevated Palantir Technologies' Maven Smart System to a "program of record." Two of NATO's most powerful members are simultaneously doubling down on AI as a tool for military advantage.

Bundeswehr Draws Lessons from Ukraine

According to Reuters, Germany's armed forces chief Lieutenant General Christian Freuding announced work on an AI system capable of analyzing battlefield data faster than any human operator. The project will draw heavily on the experience of the Ukrainian military and other armed forces.

Freuding shared observations from his visits to Ukrainian command posts, where the deployment of drones and advanced sensors has dramatically increased the volume of collected data. He noted that Ukraine has accumulated four years' worth of wartime information, enabling AI to predict how an adversary has acted in similar situations and suggest countermeasures.

The lieutenant general emphasized that tasks currently requiring hundreds of personnel and several days of work could be significantly accelerated through AI. Traditional methods alone, he argued, are insufficient to "break the enemy's decision-making cycle."

Data from Ukraine and German military exercises would be used to calibrate analytical tools. Freuding stressed that AI will serve strictly as an advisory tool — final decisions will remain with human operators. No specific service provider has been selected yet, but integrating the technology is a stated priority. He also highlighted the importance of aligning Germany's AI systems with evolving NATO standards while addressing data sovereignty and security concerns.

Pentagon Makes Maven a Centerpiece of Strategy

The US Department of Defense is moving in the same direction. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg announced that Palantir Technologies' Maven Smart System has been designated a "program of record," ensuring stable funding and resources for its continued development, integration, and operational deployment.

The US military already employs Maven across all combatant commands. The digital mission management platform generates a common operational picture, assists in identifying and selecting targets, and matches them with available weapons systems. Reports indicate the system is extensively used in operations related to Iran.

The Pentagon views AI as the central element of its strategy to connect sensors and strike systems into a unified combat network — a concept that will shape the American military for decades to come.

AI in Military Operations: A Growing Trend

The trend extends beyond Germany and the United States. In February, reports emerged that the AI tool Claude was used in a military operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Such cases illustrate how deeply artificial intelligence has already penetrated the defense and security sphere — and the pace of adoption is only accelerating.
