China Bets Big on AI in Education

China has officially unveiled a sweeping national action plan to embed artificial intelligence across its entire education system. The initiative, branded AI+ Education, was jointly introduced by the Ministry of Education and four other government agencies, according to SCMP.

The program spans every rung of the educational ladder — from primary schools to university programs and lifelong professional training. It falls under China's broader long-term education development plan through 2035, which was published in January of last year. That strategic document identified AI as the primary engine for reforming the country's education system to meet the demands of the digital economy and emerging industries.

Why This Matters

Beijing's initiative is a direct response to intensifying global competition in advanced technology. The plan's authors explicitly reference the fact that major economies — the United States, the European Union, and Singapore — have already launched their own programs to boost investment in AI education and workforce training.

Chinese authorities emphasized that AI is fundamentally redefining the skills required in the modern era, necessitating a systemic overhaul of education. A central pillar of the plan is building a nationwide computing infrastructure. Rather than relying on fragmented local projects, the government intends to consolidate computing platforms and data networks into a unified, centralized service designed for efficiency at scale.

A Multi-Tiered Integration Strategy

The plan outlines a structured approach to weaving AI into different education levels:

• Primary and secondary schools: Institutions will offer lessons designed to cultivate curiosity and problem-solving skills using new technologies.
• Universities: Higher education institutions will introduce foundational AI courses aimed at fostering cross-disciplinary innovation.
• Vocational and continuing education: Programs will focus on the "intelligent transformation" of traditional professional roles while ensuring broad public access to AI training opportunities.

Teacher Reform and Central Funding

To support the transition, Beijing plans to reform its teacher training system by incorporating AI knowledge into certification and licensing requirements for educators. The entire initiative will be funded through the central government budget.

For context, the United States also saw a significant increase in AI adoption within its education sector in 2024, underscoring the global nature of the push to integrate artificial intelligence into learning systems.
